MAKORRA WEEK :: RULES & FAQ

Thu May 24, 2012, 8:16 PM by ~chromeknickers:iconchromeknickers:
Feel like partaking in a little bit of fandom history? If so, then join us in our first Makorra Week taking place from July 22nd to July 28th in honour of #Makorra’s first year anniversary! For the 2012 theme list, please visit here.

What is Makorra Week, you ask? It is basically seven days dedicated to creating Makorra fanart, fanfiction, and other artistic deviations, such as AMVs. Each day in the week will have its own theme – seven in total – chosen by you, the members! But before we begin the theme prompting, we would like to point out the general rules of Makorra Week and open up this journal to a Q&A in case you have any questions.

THE RULES

:bulletblue: The Makorra Week folder will be open for submissions at 12:01 AM EST (-4 GMT) until 11:59 PM EST each day for each theme. Only that day’s theme will be unlocked for submission so you cannot post a deviation ahead of schedule. For those living in a different time-zone, the counter will be utilised to help suss out how much time you have to submit for that day and when you can submit for the next theme.

:bulletblue: AMVs are to be submitted in one of the following fashions: a) link your video in the appropriate theme/day journal, b) create an art deviation with a screencap from your AMV with a link to your video in the artist’s comments and submit it into the appropriate folder, or c) create a journal entry (on your own account) with your AMV embedded and submit the deviation to the appropriate folder¹. It should be noted that for option C your AMV must either be uploaded on youtube or vimeo for it to work AND this is the only time we will accept journal entries as submissions.

:bulletblue: Aside from fanvids and manipulations (of screenshots), we only accept ORIGINAL art (whether that be art or fiction). Please do not colour someone else’s lineart and submit as a MW entry, even if you credit the artist. This event is all about your creativity. Just try your best and remember that there’s a difference between being inspired by someone else’s art and copying it directly. n_n

:bulletred: PLEASE USE PROPER TAGGING & TITLES! Tag each of your works with “Makorra Week”. In addition, your title should reflect the theme/day. (e.g. Makorra Week – Jubilee or Makorra Week 2012 :: Jubilee or Makorra Week – Day 1)

:bulletred: Please DO NOT submit any deviations BEFORE the assigned date. Early submissions will be automatically rejected, but you can still resubmit on the appropriate day. Late submissions are automatically accepted, so don’t feel like you can’t submit if you missed the deadline.

:bulletred: Please DO NOT simply rename older deviations and try to submit them as themes for the current Makorra Week. Additionally, DO NOT submit your themes to your own profile earlier than the dates outlined for MW. (And by earlier we mean a month or two.)

:bulletred: The gallery WILL BE CLOSED to submissions OTHER THAN Makorra Week deviations².

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do the admins assign the themes or do the members get a choice in the matter?

:bulletpink: Members will be able to suggest themes in the comment section of our Makorra Week Themes Suggestions journal. Ultimately, themes will be determined by the popularity and creativity of our members’ suggestions.

How long will we have to work on our art/writing?

:bulletyellow: The official theme list will be posted at the beginning of June, so you will have almost two months to work on your projects. We will also post reminders every few weeks to keep everyone on track and hyped up.

Do we have to follow the theme(s) EXACTLY?

:bulletpink: Makorra Week is all about creativity and artistic interpretation; in other words, you don’t have to stick to the dictionary definition of the theme if you don’t want to.

What if I have questions DURING Makorra Week? Where do I voice my concerns?

:bulletyellow: A new journal will be posted for each day of Makorra Week; there you can ask questions, voice concerns, and, for those making AMVs, post links.

Will there be a Featured Deviation for each theme and for each genre (fanart and fanfiction)?

:bulletpink: Yes and yes. After Makorra Week, we will ask you, the members, to vote for your favourites (art and fiction) for each theme based on creativity and performance (most well-drawn or well-written in the case of fanficion). The admins will then tally the results and make any tie-breakers, if need be. Once the results are in, we will post an accumulative journal of praise and thanks, highlighting the featured deviations (the same will be done on our tumblr account) and copy those deviations onto the main MW2012 folder. The Featured folder itself will be set to random for each day/theme during the event, thus avoiding any sense of favouritism³.

What themes can we not suggest for Makorra Week?

:bulletyellow: Obviously anything offensive or themes suggested from previous Makorra Weeks: fantasy, noir, genderbender, crossover, damage, balance, ever after, scarf, jealousy.

Remember, this is not a competition. It’s all about having fun, growing as artists, and coming together as a community. And even if you can’t participate in this event, you can still provide your support to the artists and their contributions. Let’s make this event one to remember and show the fandom what an awesome group of individuals we have here on #Makorra! <3

    EXTRAS

Tumblr – #Makorra has a Makorra Week tumblr with a blog that will be updated regularly during Makorra Week and the months leading up to the event with pertinent information. It will have an “ask the admins” feature as well as display featured deviations.

Chatroom – We have created a chatroom specifically for Makorra Week – for members to get together and bounce ideas off one another, to ask admin specific questions, and to hold creativity activities to bolster your motivation.

    NOTES:

¹ For instructions on how to embed youtube and vimeo videos in journals, please read this helpful tutorial: [link]

² Due to the daily high volume of submissions, which would triple with Makorra Week entries, we have decided to make the week strictly dedicated to MW; thereby making it easier for us to manage, as well as evaluate, submissions. Once Makorra Week is over, all gallery folders will be re-opened. We apologise for any inconvenience.

³ There will be more information on this process in future journal entries.

When you submit them to the group you will see options, like Day 1 - Fantasy, Day 2 - Noir, etc. Just submit to the proper folder. ^_^

themes can be in any order right?

Each day has a theme. You submit your "Fantasy" picture on the day "Fantasy" is assigned. :) And so on.

so the art we create should only portray Mako and Korra? or can we add in other characters and use other pairings in our makorra pics.
For example: for the cross over theme I would like to add in other characters, also for the theme Damaged would it be permitted to say use Masami or another shipping to come up with a Makorra concept for 'Damaged'? do you understand what I mean? ^u^;

We're going to post a journal entry soon that really hammers home the rules and details. Now, to answer your questions.

1. a) The art should be Makorra oriented (as in it's clear these two are interacting with one another). Other LoK characters as background characters (like in a comic or even a single frame picture). So, yes, other LoK characters are fine as long as they are not the focus of the piece.

1. b) Our group doesn't currently accept other fandom characters outside of LoK and AtLA. So, for example, you could have Mako and Korra in the Harry Potter world (dressed up like Ron and Hermione or whatever). You can include other LoK characters in the crossover, again, as long as the focus of the piece is Makorra. (I should note that the admin is still in discussion over whether or not other fandom characters would be permitted in a crossover piece. But we will have that issue resolved ASAP, probably posting a journal entry about the specifics/rules of Makorra Week later this week).

2. Other ships can be alluded to, as long as it's not offensive and hateful towards the other ship (e.g. Masami). Nor do we really want anything depressing. However, if you could highlight Makorra while putting a positive spin on Masami, we'd be interested to see that. In the end, the focus should be on Makorra.

I hope that answered your questions for now. We promise to outline everything for you very shortly.

Question: I'm working on my fanfiction piece for "fantasy" (just got my inspiration back after the season finale, hehe~), and the way I'm playing it out is like Makorra is more implied than anything else, because it's from Asami and Bolin's perspectives on Mako and Korra's relationship. Would that still qualify as acceptable, even though the Makorra isn't direct?

Yes, of course. As long as the focus is Makorra, it can be told from anyone's PoV. ^_^
